Rave music is defined by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 as “sounds wholly or predominantly characterized by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”

In mid 80s some people got tired of pop culture and moved on to more colourful electronic dance music. At that time one could only go to the parties and warehouses to listen to such kind of music. In those days the music was known as acid house and Techno. This so called House and Techno culture was popular among the youth and slowly it spread to the clubs. However, Rave started in late 80s causing a feeling of great elation as well as a bit of concern. The term Rave spread like wild fire across the world. Although it never took the highlights but certainly wasn’t the main stream music but everybody knew about it.

Drum and Bass

Drum and bass is a kind of electronic music and came from British rave culture. It was between late 80s 90s that the culture of drum and bass music gained more popularity. This era was also known by the term ‘Jungle’, which drew comparisons with Acid, Techno, House, Hardcore Techno, Reggae and Dancehall.  All these genres were gaining popularity among the youth.

Radio Babylon was one of the albums that came in 1989 with mostly Drum and Bass tracks. That album was made by Meat Beat Manifesto. There are many other artists who are very popular in this genre. These are Black Sun Empire, Pendulum, Noisia, Concord Dawn and Spor.

London is called the hub of Drum and Bass as most of the music here is associated to Drum and Bass. There are other countries such as Germany, Netherlands and Belgium where Drum and Bass music is very popular. American public also began to recognise this genre in mid 1990s. In the beginning it was only popular in North America but gradually spread to the whole nation.

With the passage of time Drum and Bass music started to evolve and other genres like Reggae and Dancehall did not have much influence on its music. As in the early stages these two genres Raggae and Dancehall were too mixed with Drum & Bass. But now the producers of Drum and Bass have completely eliminated the elements of other genres and from so called Jungle music. Now it consists of electronic rhythms and breakbeats. It also includes industrial music and breakcore elements now.

One element that has been associated with this genre is the neon. In every festival or concert you will find the colourful light making the atmosphere rocking. People bring all sorts of neon to such events and make the place spectacular.
